Preliminary data from the Idaho Office of Highway Safety indicates that six motorists died in traffic collisions within Kootenai County between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The figures place the county among the most dangerous jurisdictions in the state during the period traditionally labeled the “100 deadliest days” on Idaho roads.
Statewide Traffic Fatality Trends
Only four other counties in Idaho reported higher fatal crash counts than Kootenai County during this summer window. Ada County recorded 13 deaths, followed by Bonneville County with 10, Bonner County with eight, and Canyon County with seven. Statewide, the Office of Highway Safety reported 90 fatalities during those 100 days.
The year-to-date total for Idaho stands at 150 traffic deaths. This figure represents a decrease compared to the same point in 2025, when the state recorded 174 fatalities.
Primary Causes of Fatalities
Officials identified several recurring factors contributing to these lethal crashes. The most prevalent issues included drivers failing to wear seat belts, inability to maintain their lane, and impairment from alcohol or drugs. Other significant contributors cited were driver inattention, crossing the centerline, excessive speed, and failure to obey stop signs, traffic signals, or yield requirements.
Josephine Middleton, a representative for the safety office, emphasized the lasting toll these accidents take on communities. “Every one of these deaths impact their families forever,” Middleton said.
Safety Recommendations
Authorities are urging North Idaho residents to adopt stricter safety habits behind the wheel. The agency highlighted that consistent adherence to basic traffic laws can mitigate risk significantly.
“We can save lives and prevent serious injuries by consistently choosing safety first: buckle up, stay focused, drive sober, and slow down,” Middleton said.
