Rathdrum Police Respond to Armed Standoff at Sky Meadow Villas Apartment Complex

Rathdrum police officers and Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a tense standoff Monday afternoon at the Sky Meadow Villas apartment complex on Highway 41 after a man described as suicidal and armed with multiple knives refused to cooperate with officers for approximately two hours. The situation was resolved peacefully around 4:30 PM when the man was taken into protective custody and transported to Kootenai Health for a mental health evaluation, according to Rathdrum Police Chief Trent Smith.

The incident began shortly after 2 PM when apartment residents called 911 to report a man in the complex’s parking area who appeared agitated and was brandishing knives. Arriving officers established a perimeter around the area and evacuated nearby apartments while attempting to communicate with the individual.

How Officers Resolved the Situation

Smith said officers employed crisis negotiation tactics throughout the encounter, maintaining verbal communication with the man while keeping a safe distance. A trained crisis negotiator from the KCSO arrived approximately 30 minutes into the incident and engaged the man in extended dialogue.

“This is exactly the kind of situation where patience and training save lives,” Smith said. “Our officers recognized this as a mental health crisis, not a criminal confrontation, and they responded accordingly. The goal from the beginning was to get this individual the help he needed without anyone getting hurt.”

The man eventually agreed to put down the knives and was taken into protective custody under Idaho’s involuntary hold provisions, which allow law enforcement to transport individuals in mental health crisis to a treatment facility for evaluation. No charges were filed.

Mental Health Resources in Kootenai County

The incident highlights the growing intersection of mental health crises and law enforcement response in Kootenai County. The KCSO has trained over 60% of its deputies in Crisis Intervention Team techniques, which emphasize de-escalation and connecting individuals in crisis with mental health services rather than the criminal justice system.

Heritage Health, the region’s largest community health center, operates a behavioral health crisis line at 208-625-4884 that is available 24 hours a day. The Panhandle Health District provides referrals to mental health providers and substance abuse treatment programs at panhandlehealthdistrict.org. The national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by calling or texting 988.

What Comes Next

The Rathdrum Police Department will continue its partnership with the KCSO crisis intervention program and is seeking grant funding to add a dedicated mental health liaison officer to its force. Residents who encounter someone in mental health crisis should call 911 rather than attempting to intervene directly. For non-emergency mental health concerns, contact Heritage Health at 208-625-4884.
