Free Alcohol Server Training Offered in Coeur d’Alene

Idaho State Police Offering Free Alcohol Server Training in Coeur d’Alene This May

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Idaho State Police Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) division is offering a free Alcohol Beverage Seller & Server Training session for licensed establishments across North Idaho next month. The course will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the Coeur d’Alene Resort, with two sessions available to accommodate different schedules. Preregistration is required to attend.

Training Designed to Support Business Compliance and Public Safety

The training is designed to give alcohol licensees and their employees practical, up-to-date guidance on Idaho law and responsible alcohol service. Two sessions will be offered — one at 10:00 a.m. and one at 2:00 p.m. — with each lasting approximately three hours. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of attendance.

The curriculum covers a broad range of topics critical to businesses that serve or sell alcohol throughout Kootenai County and the broader Idaho Panhandle. Key areas of instruction include current Idaho alcohol laws, administrative penalties and criminal sanctions, on-premises and off-premises service requirements, prevention of over-service, and impairment recognition. Employees will also be trained on laws related to minors, how to identify false or altered identification, and prohibited acts such as gambling violations.

The training is open to all alcohol license holders and their staff, including those working in grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants, bars, resorts, wineries, breweries, and other licensed establishments. Given the density of hospitality and retail businesses in the Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, and Hayden areas, the event represents a meaningful opportunity for local employers to invest in workforce education at no cost.

ABC Lieutenant Cites Ongoing Public Safety Concerns

ABC Lieutenant Kirk Grothaus emphasized that employee training is more than a box to check on a compliance list — it is a direct tool for reducing harm in communities across Idaho.

“This is a proactive risk reduction measure,” Lt. Grothaus said. “Establishments that invest in employee education will reduce liability, prevent violations, and directly contribute to safer communities.”

Grothaus also highlighted the broader public safety implications of improper alcohol service. “Alcohol-related incidents, including over-service and sales to minors, remain a consistent factor in crashes, assaults, and other criminal activity,” he said. “Proper training addresses these risks at the point of sale.”

The statement underscores a recurring theme for law enforcement across the North Idaho region: that prevention, when built into everyday business operations, is often more effective — and less costly — than enforcement after an incident occurs.

Impact on Kootenai County Businesses and Residents

For business owners in Coeur d’Alene and across Kootenai County, the free training offers a concrete benefit: reduced exposure to administrative penalties, fewer violations, and a stronger defense against liability in alcohol-related incidents. Idaho ABC makes clear that compliance is not simply a regulatory obligation — it carries real consequences for public safety and a business’s long-term standing.

Alcohol service violations can result in fines, license suspensions, or criminal sanctions under Idaho law. Over-service that leads to impaired driving or assaults carries significant community costs, including strain on local emergency services, law enforcement, and courts. Training front-line employees — bartenders, servers, cashiers — gives establishments a measurable advantage in preventing those outcomes.

The Coeur d’Alene area’s robust tourism economy, anchored in part by venues like the Coeur d’Alene Resort and a thriving hospitality sector along Lake Coeur d’Alene, means that responsible alcohol service is particularly relevant for maintaining the region’s reputation as a destination community.

As local leadership continues to evolve — including the recent appointment of a new Coeur d’Alene Fire Chief — community-wide efforts to reduce preventable incidents remain a shared priority across public safety agencies.

What Comes Next — How to Register

Preregistration is required for both sessions. Interested participants should register through the Idaho State Police ABC website before the May 13 date. Session one begins at 10:00 a.m. and session two at 2:00 p.m., each running approximately three hours.
