Kootenai County Drug Task Force Seizes 8,000 Fentanyl Pills in Coeur d’Alene Raid

A joint operation by the Kootenai County Drug Task Force, the DEA, and the Coeur d’Alene Police Department’s Community Action Team resulted in the seizure of approximately 8,000 counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl and the arrest of three suspects during a raid on a residence in east Coeur d’Alene Wednesday morning. The seizure represents one of the largest single fentanyl busts in Kootenai County history and underscores the scale of the synthetic opioid crisis affecting North Idaho communities.

The suspects — a 31-year-old Coeur d’Alene man, a 28-year-old Post Falls woman, and a 35-year-old Spokane man — were taken into custody without incident when task force members executed a search warrant at a residence on 15th Street near the Coeur d’Alene River. In addition to the fentanyl pills, investigators seized approximately $42,000 in cash, two handguns, packaging materials, digital scales, and multiple cell phones that will be forensically analyzed for evidence of the distribution network.

The Scale of the Fentanyl Threat

DEA Special Agent in Charge Jacob Galvan said the 8,000 pills seized could potentially represent 8,000 lethal doses, as counterfeit pills manufactured by Mexican drug cartels frequently contain wildly inconsistent amounts of fentanyl — with some pills containing enough of the synthetic opioid to kill multiple people. The pills are designed to resemble legitimate pharmaceutical oxycodone (typically blue, round, stamped with “M30”) and are sold to users who may believe they are purchasing prescription painkillers.

“Each of these pills is a potential death sentence,” Galvan said. “The individuals producing and distributing them don’t care about dosage consistency or user safety. They care about profit. And every pill we take off the street is potentially a life saved.”

How the Investigation Developed

The investigation began in January 2026 when task force detectives received information from a confidential source about a distribution network operating out of the east Coeur d’Alene area. Over the following weeks, investigators conducted surveillance, made controlled purchases, and built the case that culminated in Wednesday’s search warrant. KCSO Detective Lieutenant Jeff Howard, who oversees the drug task force, said the investigation revealed connections to a larger distribution network that sources pills from the Spokane area.

“This wasn’t a small-time operation,” Howard said. “The quantity of pills, the cash, and the evidence of organized distribution indicate a network that was moving significant quantities of fentanyl into Kootenai County communities.”

Community Impact and Resources

Fentanyl-related overdose deaths in Kootenai County have increased sharply over the past three years, with 22 fatalities recorded in 2025 — more than quadruple the number in 2022. The Panhandle Health District distributes free naloxone (Narcan) kits to community members through its offices and partner organizations. Naloxone can reverse a fentanyl overdose if administered quickly, and Idaho law protects Good Samaritans who administer it from legal liability.

Residents who suspect drug activity in their neighborhoods can contact the KCSO tip line at 208-446-1300 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. What Comes Next

The three suspects have been booked into the Kootenai County Jail on charges including trafficking in a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, and conspiracy. Bond was set at $250,000 each. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional arrests are possible as detectives analyze evidence from the search warrant.
