Celebrate Arbor day in Coeur d’Alene next weekend

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to Celebrate Arbor Day at City Park with Tree Planting, Free Seedlings, and More

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — Residents across Kootenai County are invited to celebrate Arbor Day in Coeur d’Alene next weekend, with a community tree-planting event at City Park offering free seedlings, volunteer opportunities, and family-friendly activities. The annual Arbor Day celebration is set for Friday, April 24, running from 10 a.m. to noon at City Park along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Tree Planting Along the Coeur d’Alene Seawall

The centerpiece of the event is a collaborative tree-planting effort organized by the City of Coeur d’Alene’s parks department. Volunteers will work alongside city staff to plant 18 trees in self-watering, above-ground planting pots along the City Park seawall — a visible and lasting contribution to one of North Idaho’s most beloved public spaces.

To show appreciation for those who roll up their sleeves, the city will provide coffee and donuts for participating volunteers. It’s a small but welcome gesture for community members who give their time to improve Coeur d’Alene’s green spaces.

The seawall planting reflects a broader commitment to maintaining the natural beauty that defines the Coeur d’Alene waterfront — a feature that draws visitors from across the Inland Northwest and contributes to the city’s quality of life and property values alike.

Free Tree Seedling Giveaway at City Park and NIC Campus

In addition to the organized planting, the City of Coeur d’Alene and the Arbor Day Organization of North Idaho will distribute free tree seedlings in front of the City Park Bandshell from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 24. Residents are encouraged to take seedlings home to plant in their own yards — a grassroots approach to expanding Kootenai County’s urban tree canopy one property at a time.

A raffle will also be held for a selection of larger young trees in planters, giving a few lucky participants the chance to take home a more established tree ready for planting.

The festivities continue the following day at the Molstead Library on the North Idaho College campus, where a second tree seedling giveaway will run from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. That event will also feature vendor booths and snacks, making it a worthwhile stop for families and NIC-area residents who may not be able to attend the Friday event at City Park.

Impact on Kootenai County Residents

Events like Coeur d’Alene’s Arbor Day celebration reflect the kind of community-driven stewardship that North Idaho residents have long embraced — neighbors working together to improve public spaces without relying heavily on government mandates or outside funding. The volunteer-based tree planting model keeps costs manageable for the city while giving residents a direct stake in their community’s future.

Urban trees also deliver measurable benefits for homeowners and taxpayers alike, including reduced stormwater runoff, lower cooling costs, and improved property aesthetics. Planting along the City Park seawall in particular enhances one of Coeur d’Alene’s most prominent public areas, supporting local tourism and the small businesses that depend on foot traffic along the waterfront.

The Molstead Library stop on the North Idaho College campus extends the reach of the event beyond City Park, ensuring that residents from across the Coeur d’Alene area — including those near the Highway 95 corridor — have a chance to participate.

It’s also worth noting that community events like this one take place against a busy backdrop for local government. Coeur d’Alene recently welcomed Jon Fugitt as its new Fire Chief, a leadership transition that reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to public safety alongside quality-of-life initiatives.

Residents who want to volunteer for the seawall tree planting on Friday, April 24 should plan to arrive at City Park by 10 a.m. Coffee and donuts will be on hand. Those who cannot make Friday’s event are encouraged to visit the Molstead Library at North Idaho College on Saturday, April 25 between noon and 2 p.m. for the second seedling giveaway, vendor booths, and snacks.

Both events are free and open to the public. No registration appears to be required for seedling pickup or to attend.
