Silver Lake Mall evacuated in Coeur d’Alene after bomb threat, police say

Silver Lake Mall Evacuated in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho After Bomb Threat Determined to Be Swatting Call

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho — Silver Lake Mall in Coeur d’Alene was evacuated Friday afternoon after a caller threatened gun violence and claimed to have a bomb, prompting a large multi-agency law enforcement response that lasted nearly two hours. Authorities with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department (CDAPD) later determined the incident was most likely a “swatting” call — a false emergency report intended to draw a heavy police response.

Threat Targeted Blacksheep Sporting Goods Inside Silver Lake Mall

According to CDAPD Sergeant Jared Reneau, officers first responded around 3:50 p.m. to Blacksheep Sporting Goods inside Silver Lake Mall after receiving a threatening call made using the store’s phone. The caller claimed to be in the parking lot and threatened to enter the store within 30 minutes armed with a rifle and an explosive device to harm people.

Coeur d’Alene Police Captain David Hagar told NonStop Local that just before 4 p.m., the threat also included a call to the mall’s administrative office. Officers from multiple agencies responded immediately, securing the parking lot and beginning an exhaustive search for the suspect.

Assisting CDAPD were Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Idaho State Police troopers. The Kootenai County regional SWAT team also joined the search. The Spokane Bomb Squad was requested for additional assistance as authorities worked to clear the building and surrounding area.

Multi-Agency Search Yields No Suspect

Law enforcement conducted what Sergeant Reneau described as an “exhaustive” search of the mall and surrounding parking areas. For nearly two hours, officers cleared the mall of shoppers and employees while continuing their hunt for the individual who made the threatening call. No suspect was located.

By 6:30 p.m., the search was called off. Authorities announced that the incident was most likely a swatting call — consistent with a pattern of false emergency reports that have been increasing across North Idaho in recent weeks. Officials noted there has been a high number of swatting calls in Idaho recently and that this incident may be related to that trend.

Despite determining the threat was likely not credible, law enforcement emphasized the response was necessary and appropriate. “The safety of the community remains our highest priority, and all threats are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated,” Sergeant Reneau stated in a press release issued Friday night.

Impact on Kootenai County Residents and the Community

The evacuation of Silver Lake Mall — one of Coeur d’Alene’s primary retail destinations — disrupted hundreds of shoppers and employees on a busy Friday afternoon. The multi-agency response drew resources from across the Kootenai County region, including SWAT assets and bomb squad personnel from Spokane.

Swatting incidents carry serious consequences beyond the immediate disruption. These false calls divert law enforcement resources from genuine emergencies, endanger the public and first responders, and can result in federal criminal charges for those responsible. The rising number of such incidents in Idaho — as noted by Coeur d’Alene police — signals a troubling trend that local agencies are working to address.

The CDAPD and partner agencies handled the situation with a coordinated, professional response, ensuring the mall was fully cleared and thoroughly searched before standing down.
