Encompass Health announces plans to build a 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Post Falls, Idaho

Post Falls is set to gain a major new healthcare facility after Encompass Health Corp. announced plans to construct a freestanding, 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the city. The Birmingham, Alabama-based company — the largest operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the United States — confirmed the project on May 11, 2026, citing Kootenai County’s rapid population growth and a recognized shortage of specialized rehabilitation services in the region.

Filling a Critical Gap in North Idaho Healthcare

According to Encompass Health, the new Post Falls facility will treat patients recovering from serious medical events and injuries, including stroke, brain and spinal cord trauma, amputations, and complex orthopedic conditions. The hospital will provide around-the-clock nursing care alongside physical, occupational, and speech therapy services delivered by specialized clinical staff.

Kim Steward, president of Encompass Health’s West region, pointed to the area’s rapid expansion as a driving factor. “Kootenai County is one of the fastest-growing regions in the state and the nation, and the community is already underserved in inpatient rehabilitation,” Steward said. “This hospital will help meet that growing need by bringing high-quality, specialized care closer to home.”

The announcement reflects a broader pattern of healthcare investment in the Coeur d’Alene corridor, where population growth has consistently outpaced the expansion of medical infrastructure. For patients currently requiring inpatient rehabilitation, the new facility would eliminate the need to travel to Boise or out of state for specialized recovery care. Kootenai Health has also been expanding its surgical capabilities, as seen in a recent announcement about a new surgical system added to the county’s hospital network.

What the Facility Will Include

The planned hospital is designed with both clinical function and patient experience in mind. Amenities and services are expected to include private patient rooms, a large therapy gymnasium outfitted with advanced rehabilitation technology, an activities of daily living suite, an in-house dialysis suite, a pharmacy, a dining room, and an outdoor therapy courtyard.

The combination of private rooms and specialized therapy spaces reflects the rehabilitation-focused model that distinguishes inpatient rehabilitation hospitals from traditional acute care settings. Patients admitted to facilities like this one typically require intensive, medically supervised therapy following a serious illness or injury before they are ready to return home.

The Post Falls location will become Encompass Health’s second Idaho facility, joining an existing hospital in Boise. Nationally, the company operates 175 hospitals across 39 states and Puerto Rico.

Impact on Kootenai County Residents

For families across the North Idaho Panhandle — from Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls to Hayden, Rathdrum, and Spirit Lake — the new hospital represents a meaningful addition to local healthcare access. Residents who suffer a stroke, serious injury, or complex medical event that requires intensive rehabilitation currently have limited local options for that level of specialized inpatient care.

The facility is also expected to bring new jobs to the Post Falls area, as inpatient rehabilitation hospitals require nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, physicians, and support staff. In a healthcare labor market that continues to face staffing pressures statewide, this kind of facility investment can help anchor clinical talent in the region.

The announcement also arrives as Idaho lawmakers and state health officials continue to shape the future of Medicaid and healthcare access. The governor recently signed legislation establishing Medicaid expansion work requirements set to take effect by 2027, a policy shift that could affect how patients in facilities like this one qualify for coverage.

What Comes Next

The Post Falls rehabilitation hospital is expected to open in 2028, pending regulatory review and required licensing approvals at the local, state, and federal levels. Encompass Health noted that the project timeline and outcome remain subject to those review processes, as well as broader construction and operational factors.

Residents and community stakeholders seeking additional information about the project can visit encompasshealth.com. As the regulatory and permitting process moves forward, further details on the facility’s exact location, construction timeline, and staffing plans are expected to be released.
