A woman’s body was found in the Marie Creek area of the Coeur d’Alene National Forest on Sunday evening after bear hunters stumbled upon the remains and contacted authorities. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office received the call at approximately 8:00 p.m. and dispatched backcountry deputies and detectives to the scene.
Remote Location Complicated Access for Investigators
Reaching the body required significant effort from responding personnel. The area was accessible only after crews cleared downed trees to open a path for vehicles. Investigators determined the woman had been at the location for an extended period before being discovered.
A passport found near the scene indicated the deceased may be a 69-year-old woman from New York. Authorities have withheld formal identification pending results from the coroner and notification of next of kin.
No Foul Play Suspected as Investigation Continues
The KCSO investigation remains open, though officials said at this stage they do not suspect foul play. An autopsy has been scheduled to help determine the cause and manner of death.
The Coeur d’Alene National Forest spans a large portion of the North Idaho Panhandle, drawing hunters, hikers, and outdoor recreationists throughout the year. Remote backcountry areas can present challenges for emergency responders, as this case illustrated.
Anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to contact the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is ongoing, and additional details are expected once the coroner completes the identification process and next of kin are reached.
