Coeur d’Alene Fireworks Show to Launch Idaho’s Largest Ever Aerial Shell Over Lake Saturday Night

Wildfire smoke over a valley

Kootenai County residents and visitors along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene are in for a historic display Saturday evening as the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show commemorates America’s 250th anniversary — capped by the largest aerial shell ever launched in Idaho history. The 20-minute show is scheduled to begin between 9:30 and 10 p.m. and will feature more than 2,000 aerial effects and a grand finale with upward of 300 fireworks.

A Record-Breaking Shell Takes Center Stage

The undisputed centerpiece of this year’s event is a custom-built 24-inch aerial shell — a handcrafted American-made pyrotechnic that surpasses anything previously fired in the state of Idaho. The shell will launch from a dedicated barge roughly three-quarters of the way through the show, giving the crowd a buildup before the climactic finale.

Two launch barges will be deployed on the lake to support the scale of the display. Pyro Spectaculars North is producing and operating the show, as it has for more than a decade in Coeur d’Alene.

Show producer Dalton Vaughan has been at the helm of every Coeur d’Alene Independence Day production since 2010. “It’s a passion, hobby and family business,” Vaughan has said of the work. Preparation crews were already on the water beginning Thursday, rigging the barges and staging equipment for Saturday night’s launch.

Marking America’s 250th Birthday

This year’s celebration carries extra weight as the nation marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “This Fourth of July is especially meaningful as our nation celebrates its 250th birthday,” said Craig Brosenne, reflecting the sentiment shared by many planning this year’s event.

The milestone anniversary has drawn increased attention and investment in patriotic programming across North Idaho. Coeur d’Alene is also hosting an America250 Patriotic Celebration Friday at the downtown courthouse, giving residents a full weekend of Independence Day festivities before Saturday night’s main pyrotechnic event over the lake.

Where to Watch in Kootenai County

The best vantage points for Saturday’s show are the downtown Coeur d’Alene waterfront and the open water of Lake Coeur d’Alene by boat. Both offer unobstructed sightlines to the launch barges. Spectators who want an elevated experience can purchase premium viewing tickets through The Coeur d’Alene Resort’s Fourth Fest package, which puts guests directly on the waterfront with the lakeside backdrop.

Residents in Hayden, Post Falls, and surrounding communities who make the trip into downtown Coeur d’Alene for the evening are encouraged to arrive early, as the waterfront draws large crowds on the holiday weekend. Parking and traffic along the Sherman Avenue corridor typically builds significantly in the hours before the show.

What to Expect Saturday Night

The show runs approximately 20 minutes from first shell to final burst. With more than 2,000 aerial effects programmed into the sequence and 300 fireworks loaded into the grand finale alone, the production is designed to build steadily before the 24-inch shell marks the beginning of the end. Once that shell climbs off its barge — the largest of its kind ever fired over Idaho skies — the finale will follow in rapid succession.
