A 55-year-old Athol man was taken into custody following a standoff with law enforcement on East Bertsch Avenue, after authorities discovered methamphetamine and evidence of drug dealing at his residence. James E. Spencer had active arrest warrants at the time of the incident, and detectives with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office encountered him inside a trailer while executing a search warrant related to a narcotics investigation.
When officers arrived to serve the warrant, Spencer refused to leave the residence and barricaded himself inside. The sheriff’s office responded by calling in a SWAT team and issuing a shelter-in-place advisory for the surrounding area in the Athol community, north of Coeur d’Alene.
