The Bureau of Land Management has announced a temporary, one-month closure of the Beauty Bay Recreation Site, a popular rest stop and picnic area located roughly 11 miles southeast of Coeur d’Alene along Highway 97 in Kootenai County. The site will be closed from September 8 through October 8 to allow crews to remove hazardous trees and manage vegetation throughout the area.
Pine Beetle Damage Driving Timber Harvest
The closure is tied to a commercial timber harvest operation targeting trees killed or weakened by pine beetle infestations. BLM officials say the work, which also includes broader vegetation management, poses a direct safety risk to the public, making it necessary to keep visitors out of the area during active harvest operations. Beauty Bay’s recreation area features a highway rest stop with a small picnic area that draws visitors traveling along the Lake Coeur d’Alene corridor.
What Comes Next for North Idaho Visitors
The site is expected to reopen to the public once harvest operations are complete, around October 8. Visitors planning to stop at Beauty Bay this fall should plan alternate routes or rest stops along Highway 97 during the closure period. No other BLM recreation areas in the North Idaho Panhandle were listed as affected by this closure.
