Injury Crash on Highway 53 Near Rathdrum, Idaho Blocks Traffic After FedEx Truck and Semi Collide

A two-vehicle injury crash on Highway 53 near milepost 12 in Rathdrum, Idaho, temporarily blocked the roadway on the afternoon of April 20, 2026, after a FedEx delivery truck turned left into the path of an oncoming semi-truck. The Idaho State Police, Idaho Transportation Department, and Northern Lakes Fire all responded to the scene in Kootenai County, where both drivers were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

What Happened on Highway 53 Near Rathdrum

According to the Idaho State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 1:44 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2026, on Highway 53 near milepost 12, a corridor that runs through North Idaho’s Rathdrum Prairie and serves as a key east-west route connecting communities across Kootenai County.

A FedEx delivery truck, driven by a 33-year-old male from Spokane, Washington, was traveling eastbound on Highway 53 when the driver initiated a left turn. A Kenworth truck and trailer, traveling westbound and operated by a 40-year-old male from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, was unable to avoid the turning vehicle. The FedEx truck was struck by the Kenworth during the turn.

Both drivers sustained injuries in the collision. Emergency responders transported each man to an area hospital, and Idaho State Police confirmed that neither injury was considered life-threatening. Northern Lakes Fire provided emergency response at the scene alongside law enforcement and transportation personnel.

Highway 53 Blocked as Crews Clear the Scene

The crash blocked Highway 53 near Rathdrum as cleanup and scene clearance operations continued in the hours following the collision. Idaho Transportation Department crews worked alongside first responders to manage traffic and begin clearing the roadway.

Highway 53 is a heavily traveled route in Kootenai County, used daily by commercial trucks, commuters, and residents traveling between Rathdrum, Post Falls, and surrounding communities in the Panhandle region. A blocking crash involving two large commercial vehicles — including a fully loaded Kenworth semi — can create significant disruption for motorists traveling through the area, particularly during afternoon hours when traffic volume is higher.

As of the initial report from Idaho State Police, the crash remained under active investigation. No citations or charges had been announced at the time of reporting. Idaho State Police District 1, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, is responsible for traffic enforcement and investigation across Kootenai County and surrounding Panhandle counties including Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, and Shoshone.

Impact on Kootenai County Residents and Commuters

Commercial truck traffic on Highway 53 and nearby corridors reflects the continued growth of delivery and freight activity across Kootenai County. As the region’s population expands — particularly in Rathdrum, Post Falls, and Hayden — demand for delivery services and commercial transportation has increased alongside residential and business development.

Crashes involving commercial delivery vehicles and large semi-trucks remain a concern on North Idaho highways where freight routes intersect with local traffic patterns. Officials encourage drivers to remain alert at intersections along Highway 53, particularly where left-turn movements cross oncoming traffic lanes.

Separately, Kootenai County public safety agencies continue to manage a range of community priorities. Earlier this month, Jon Fugitt was announced as the new Coeur d’Alene Fire Chief, bringing continued leadership to the region’s emergency response infrastructure.

What Comes Next

The Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the April 20 crash on Highway 53 near Rathdrum. Investigators will review the circumstances of the left-turn maneuver and determine whether any traffic violations contributed to the collision.
