First responders and community members gathered in Coeur d’Alene on Friday to honor the sacrifices made during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The annual remembrance ceremony took place at Fallen Heroes Plaza in Cherry Hill, drawing more than 70 attendees for a solemn tribute to fallen heroes.
Ceremony Honors Fallen Responders
An honor guard composed of members from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Police Department raised the American flag to half-staff during the proceedings. The unit included Fire Marshal Craig Etherton, Captain Matt Tosi, Engineer Josh Hoston, Sergeant Jared Reneau, Lieutenant Nick Knoll, Detective Caleb Hutchison, and Detective Jake Brazle.
Coeur d’Alene Police Lt. Nick Knoll emphasized the importance of the event for the families of those who died. “It’s an honor to do it, for the family, so that they can see their loved ones are not forgotten,” Knoll told the Coeur d’Alene Press.
Local Officials Reflect on Service
Coeur d’Alene Fire Chief John Fugitt marked a significant personal milestone during the ceremony. He noted that September 11 was his first day as a firefighter twenty-five years ago. Fugitt expressed hope that remembering these events helps the nation move forward.
Fire Marshal Craig Etherton recalled the bravery of firefighters who ran toward the collapsing towers to assist their colleagues. Christian Timpani, co-director for the North Idaho chapter of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, was also in attendance, having witnessed the second plane impact the World Trade Center from a distance.
Attendees Mike and Tina Sanchez described the atmosphere as quiet and respectful. The event serves as a local reminder of the national tragedy that reshaped public safety protocols across Idaho and the country.
