Coeur d’Alene Set to Break Ground on First Latter-day Saint Temple in Northern Idaho

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple on August 29, marking a significant milestone for the faith community across North Idaho and the Panhandle. The event represents the arrival of the first temple of the denomination in northern Idaho and underscores the region’s growing religious infrastructure.

Elder Hutch U. Fale, a General Authority Seventy and member of the United States West Area presidency, will preside over the groundbreaking. The ceremony follows the temple’s official announcement on October 6, 2024, when then-Church President Russell M. Nelson revealed the Coeur d’Alene location as part of a historic unveiling of 17 new temples announced during that general conference.

Project Scale and Design

The temple will occupy a 10.9-acre site located at the corner of Hanley Avenue and Coeur Terre Boulevard in Coeur d’Alene. The single-story structure is designed to span approximately 29,630 square feet. In addition to the main temple building, church planners have included provisions for a meetinghouse and ancillary structures on the grounds, creating a comprehensive religious campus for the community.

The facility will serve members across North Idaho and represents significant investment in local infrastructure and community development. The temple’s location positions it as a focal point for worship and religious activity in Coeur d’Alene and surrounding areas including Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum, and Spirit Lake.

Context Within Idaho’s Expansion

The Coeur d’Alene temple is one of 11 houses of worship belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints currently in various stages of construction, planning, or development across Idaho. The state is home to more than 482,000 members of the faith, organized into over 1,300 wards and branches statewide, making Idaho one of the strongest concentrations of the denomination outside Utah.

The 2024 announcement of 17 temples nationally reflected broader expansion efforts by church leadership to increase the number of temples available to members. The Coeur d’Alene project specifically addresses longstanding needs in the northern tier of Idaho, where members have historically traveled to other states for temple services.

Local Significance for Kootenai County

For Coeur d’Alene residents and Kootenai County broadly, the temple represents both a spiritual hub and an economic development opportunity. Major construction projects of this scale typically generate local employment, vendor opportunities, and sustained economic activity over the building phase. The facility is expected to draw visitors to the region and contribute to the area’s identity as a center for faith-based community life.

The groundbreaking in late August will formally launch the construction phase, following completion of site preparation and permitting processes. Church officials have not yet announced a projected completion timeline, though similar projects typically span several years from groundbreaking to dedication.

What Comes Next

Residents interested in attending the August 29 groundbreaking ceremony should monitor official Church of Jesus Christ announcements for details regarding time, location, parking, and any restrictions on attendance. The ceremony is expected to draw church members from across North Idaho and potentially beyond.

Those seeking more information about the project can visit the Church’s official website or contact local meetinghouses throughout Kootenai County. The temple joins other recent community developments in Coeur d’Alene, including expanded summer programming such as the music series launching its second season at McEuen Park, reflecting the area’s continued growth and investment in quality-of-life amenities.
