Fast-Moving Fire Forces Evacuations North of Bonners Ferry

Wildfire smoke over a valley

A rapidly spreading fire in the Turner Hill area prompted mandatory evacuations Wednesday evening in Boundary County, approximately 8 miles north of Bonners Ferry. The blaze, estimated at 75 to 100 acres, forced residents from multiple neighborhoods as firefighting crews mobilized to contain the advance.

The Idaho Department of Lands and North Bench Fire District established unified command of the operation. A 20-person initial crew arrived shortly after 11 p.m., with one Department of Lands fire engine already positioned on scene and three additional engines en route to support suppression efforts.

Evacuation Areas and Wind Conditions

The Boundary County Sheriff’s Office issued a “Go” evacuation status affecting residents in the 3000 block of Turner Hill Road extending east to Highway 95, as well as Holmes Road, Fleming Creek Road, Kings Row, Fawn Lane, and associated side roads. The Boundary County Fairgrounds was designated as an evacuation center for displaced residents.

Aggressive fire behavior, driven by wind gusts around 40 miles per hour, complicated suppression efforts throughout the evening. The strong winds carried embers across the terrain and accelerated the fire’s forward progress across the dry landscape.

Community Resources

Residents in affected areas followed law enforcement directives to leave immediately. Emergency services coordinated traffic flow and ensured safe passage for families fleeing the evacuation zone. Updates on the fire’s status and evacuation orders were distributed through Boundary County emergency management channels.

The Turner Hill Fire underscores the ongoing risk of large, wind-driven wildfires across North Idaho during summer months. Residents in fire-prone areas are advised to maintain awareness of local evacuation procedures and keep emergency supplies accessible during fire season. Similar evacuation operations have affected Kootenai County communities in recent years, including the Lampert Fire near Worley.
