Friday is the deadline to request absentee ballots in Idaho ahead of 2026 primary election

Friday Deadline to Request Absentee Ballot for Idaho’s May 19 Primary Election

Idaho voters have until 5 p.m. Friday to request an absentee ballot for the May 19, 2026 primary election, according to the Idaho Secretary of State’s Office. The deadline applies to mail-in ballot requests, which can be submitted online at VoteIdaho.gov. Kootenai County residents — along with voters across North Idaho and the state — are encouraged to act before the cutoff.

What’s on the Ballot This Primary

The 2026 primary is among the most consequential in recent memory for Idaho. All three of Idaho’s congressional seats are contested, along with every constitutional office in the state — including the governor’s office — and all 105 seats in the Idaho Legislature. Local races such as county commissioner and county clerk positions are also on the ballot, making this primary directly relevant to Kootenai County residents.

Secretary of State Phil McGrane emphasized the stakes in a public statement. “Primary elections matter,” McGrane said. “The races on the ballot range from Idaho’s congressional seats and state legislative races down to the hyperlocal precinct committeemen who represent your neighborhood.”

Options for Voters Who Miss the Absentee Deadline

Missing Friday’s absentee request deadline does not mean missing the election. In-person early voting is currently underway in many Idaho counties, including those across the Panhandle. Voters can also cast their ballots on Election Day, May 19, at their designated polling locations.

Friday is additionally the last day to register ahead of the primary under standard procedures — but Idaho law allows same-day voter registration, both on Election Day and during early voting. That flexibility makes participation accessible for any eligible Kootenai County resident who has not yet registered.

Key Dates to Know

May 9 (Friday): Deadline to request an absentee ballot and deadline for standard pre-election voter registration, both at 5 p.m.

May 15: Final day for in-person early voting and in-person absentee voting at county offices. Some smaller Idaho counties permit voters to complete and submit absentee ballots directly at the county clerk’s office without mailing them.

May 19: Primary Election Day. Polls close at 8 p.m., and all absentee ballots must be received by county clerks by that time to be counted.

How to Check Your Status and Find Voting Locations

Voters can use VoteIdaho.gov to confirm their registration status, preview their specific ballot, and locate the nearest early voting site. McGrane encouraged all eligible Idahoans to make a plan. “In Idaho, we make it easy to register, vote, and preview your own ballot before Election Day,” he said.

Kootenai County residents with questions about polling locations or ballot drop-off procedures can also contact the Kootenai County Elections office directly for local guidance.
