Hayden officials said Tuesday the city made meaningful progress toward a new law enforcement services agreement with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. The proposed month-to-month contract would address overtime billing, accountability and a direct overhead charge.
The Kootenai County Board of Commissioners has received a draft agreement. The Hayden City Council is scheduled to consider it at its regular meeting Oct. 27.
Hayden’s previous law enforcement contract with the sheriff’s office expired Sept. 30. The city had declined to renew a proposed agreement for fiscal year 2027. Hayden’s contract with the sheriff’s office was valued at $1.2 million.
Financial support from Hayden could resume immediately if Kootenai County accepts the terms. The city and sheriff’s office are also continuing discussions about back payments connected to the absence of a contract during October.
A Hayden press release said the draft addresses “how overtime is billed, how accountability can evolve, and a direct overhead charge.” Hayden and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office remain committed to public safety and reaching a mutually acceptable agreement.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris declined to comment Tuesday.
