Motorists traveling along Interstate 90 in North Idaho should prepare for reduced lane capacity this autumn as the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) begins critical bridge maintenance near Coeur d’Alene. The upcoming project, which targets structural components at Blue Creek Bay east of the city, will narrow traffic flow to one lane in each direction starting September 8.
Scheduled Maintenance on I-90
The ITD has identified the need to repair and replace expansion joints on the bridge structure. These mechanical components are essential for infrastructure longevity, allowing the concrete and steel to expand and contract safely as temperatures fluctuate throughout the year. Without functioning joints, bridges can suffer premature wear or structural stress.

Edward Cabale, the ITD project manager for the work, explained the timing strategy. “We strategically scheduled this work for after Labor Day, when seasonal traffic volumes typically decrease,” Cabale said.

The reduction to a single lane per direction is expected to create bottlenecks during rush hours and weekend travel periods. Drivers commuting between Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, and Rathdrum should anticipate longer travel times through the Blue Creek Bay area. The construction window is projected to run through November. ITD crews will likely complete the joint replacements before winter weather conditions make outdoor bridge work hazardous or impossible.
