Idaho voters will choose among six candidates for governor in 15 days, with several candidates proposing changes to taxes, wages and state spending.
Idaho Food Tax Proposals
Terri Pickens plans to eliminate Idaho’s sales tax on food and supports raising the state’s minimum wage to at least $15 an hour. Pickens said Idaho is one of 11 states that taxes food and has the highest percentage among those states.
John Stegner also supports eliminating the sales tax on groceries. He described the levy as regressive and said it places the greatest burden on people with the lowest incomes. Stegner supports tax breaks for the lowest-income earners.
State Spending and Property Taxes
Jacob Burnett supports increased investment in agriculture and protection for farmland. His proposals also include audits of all state government spending and the elimination of property taxes.
Burnett proposes replacing property-tax revenue by legalizing recreational marijuana.
