Judge Sentences Hayden Man to 14 Years for Methamphetamine Offenses

Meta description: Matthew James Saunders received a 14-year Idaho prison sentence after convictions involving methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and a protection-order violation.

Matthew James Saunders, 42, was sentenced to a unified 14-year prison term after being convicted of possessing methamphetamine with intent to deliver, possessing drug paraphernalia and violating a protection order.

District Judge Regina McCrea imposed the sentence. Saunders will be eligible for parole after serving four years.

Protection Order Violation and Hotel Search

A temporary protection order issued in December 2025 barred Saunders from contacting several people, including a 17-year-old female.

Deputies later located Saunders and the teenager together in a hotel room. Investigators found drug paraphernalia and more than two ounces of methamphetamine in the room.

The Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said the teenager’s mother became suspicious that Saunders and the girl were meeting in violation of the order. The office said the mother believed they were at a hotel and contacted law enforcement.

Idaho Criminal Penalties

Possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver is a felony punishable by up to life in prison. Possession of drug paraphernalia and violating a temporary protection order are misdemeanors, each carrying a maximum penalty of one year in jail.
