K-9 Appa Discharged From Veterinary Care Following Surgery in Wolf Lodge Incident

K-9 Appa, a Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office patrol dog shot during a law enforcement pursuit Tuesday night near Wolf Lodge Creek Road, has been released from veterinary care and is recovering at home, authorities announced Thursday.

The canine underwent two surgeries Wednesday following the incident, which resulted in a deputy-involved shooting and the death of a suspect. Despite the severity of the injuries, the Sheriff’s Office reported that Appa’s prognosis remains positive.

Recovery Underway in Coeur d’Alene Area

Appa is now recuperating with his handler and family in Kootenai County as he continues his healing process. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the community’s strong response to the incident, stating that “the outpouring of support from our community has been overwhelming. We are deeply grateful for the prayers, encouragement, and well wishes.”, as first reported by the Coeur d’Alene Press

Authorities expressed cautious optimism about the canine’s recovery trajectory. “While K9 Appa still has a road to recovery ahead of him, we are encouraged by his progress and remain hopeful,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its Thursday update.
