Brett Nelson has stepped down as Kootenai County Undersheriff, the sheriff’s office confirmed Thursday afternoon. Nelson served in the position for six years before his departure, which the office has not publicly detailed.
Sheriff Bob Norris told the Coeur d’Alene Press Nelson’s resignation marks the end of a tenure marked by steady service to North Idaho. “We appreciate his service and his dedication to the community,” Norris said. “He served honorably for six years.”
Nelson did not respond to requests for comment Thursday about the circumstances of his departure.
Nelson’s Career Path in Kootenai County
Nelson came to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office in 2020 after retiring from the Santa Ana Police Department in California. He initially joined the agency as a deputy sheriff assigned to the county jail before transferring to patrol duties. Norris promoted Nelson to undersheriff in October 2021.
Lt. Mark Ellis, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said no additional information would be made public regarding Nelson’s resignation.
The resignation leaves a gap in the department’s command structure. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office manages law enforcement across the county, including jurisdictions in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, and other Panhandle communities. The undersheriff role typically serves as second-in-command and handles administrative and operational duties.
It remains unclear whether the sheriff’s office plans to promote an existing captain to the undersheriff position or conduct an outside search for Nelson’s replacement.
