The first phase of the Montrose Sports Complex in Coeur d’Alene is nearing completion and is expected to open to the public in 2027, city officials announced. The initial development on the 6.6-acre parcel includes two north-facing baseball fields and supporting facilities, representing the first major improvement to a site the city committed to developing nearly three decades ago.
Construction on phase one began in 2025 and has made substantial progress through 2026. According to Robbie Quinn, the city’s parks planner, the project is in its final stages. “They are basically done, just getting a few growing areas still established,” Quinn told the Coeur d’Alene Press. The facility will feature restrooms, a playground, and a concessions building when it opens.
Background: A Decades-Long Community Promise
The Montrose neighborhood parcel sits next to Orgill on Empire Way and has deep roots in Coeur d’Alene’s development planning. The city promised the land to the neighborhood’s developer in 1998, but development was delayed for years. The city purchased the property in 2023, clearing the way for the sports complex project to move forward.
Phase Two Design Under Consideration
While phase one moves toward completion, city planners are still evaluating designs for phase two. Four potential layout concepts were presented to commissioners, each offering a different approach to expanded recreational amenities. Concepts A and B would relocate fields to the southwest edge of the property with increased parking capacity. Concepts C and D would position fields along the southern boundary with less parking space.
The full phase two development could include adult baseball fields, adult softball fields, a community center, two parking lots, a splash pad, and an expanded baseball complex. However, commissioners decided to workshop the plan further before submitting a final master plan to city leadership.
That hesitation reflects a broader need identified by at least one commissioner. Bill Carlson, speaking during discussions of the project, noted the deficit: “We need adult baseball fields. We don’t have any.” Coeur d’Alene currently operates Sportsman’s Park at Spokane Street and 21st Avenue, which features an adult-size baseball field, but officials view the Montrose complex as critical to expanding recreational opportunities across the city, as first reported by the Coeur d’Alene Press.

Phase one’s opening in 2027 will provide youth baseball fields and recreational amenities to the Montrose neighborhood and serve families throughout Kootenai County. The design review process for phase two is ongoing, with commissioners expected to evaluate the four concepts and make recommendations on which layout best serves the community’s long-term recreational needs.
