Post Falls police officers made 15 arrests for suspected federal immigration law violations on Thursday, marking the first major enforcement action since the department joined a federal partnership two months ago. The operation highlights the city’s expanding role in border security within Kootenai County.
The Post Falls Police Department entered into a 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) earlier this summer, allowing local officers to perform certain immigration enforcement duties. As reported by cdapress.com, the recent arrests followed a week of joint patrol operations conducted from Aug. 24 to Aug. 28.
Joint Patrol Operations
During the training period, ICE agents accompanied Post Falls officers on routine patrols. These combined efforts resulted in 13 arrests. According to a department release, officers determined that individuals had committed immigration violations through admissions, available records, or other evidence gathered during encounters.
Two additional arrests for immigration violations were made by Post Falls police later, bringing the total to 15 on Thursday. The department emphasized that these numbers reflect a specific training window rather than a standard operational baseline.
Ongoing Enforcement Strategy
City officials stated they do not expect future arrest totals to mirror the figures from this intensive training period. Instead, officers will apply the skills and knowledge gained through the program as job requirements demand. This approach allows the department to integrate immigration enforcement into daily duties without dedicating excessive resources solely to federal violations.
The 287(g) program has been a point of discussion in North Idaho, with some residents supporting enhanced local enforcement while others raise concerns about resource allocation. The Post Falls Police Chief previously defended similar technology initiatives, such as license plate readers, noting their importance for public safety and investigative efficiency.
