A 32-year-old Rathdrum man is being held in Kootenai County Jail following his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder and felony injury to a child, according to police. Aaron Dyk was taken into custody late Friday night after officers responded to a residence near Idaho Highway 41 in the Nagle area around 8:10 p.m.
The call came in regarding a young teenage girl experiencing a medical emergency. Upon arrival, Rathdrum Police Department officers learned that Dyk had allegedly caused injuries to the victim approximately one week earlier. He reportedly told officers he had noticed changes in the girl’s health over time before her condition deteriorated.
The girl was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in critical condition. Dyk is expected to face formal charges of attempted murder and felony injury to a child as the investigation continues, according to police reports.
Rathdrum Police Chief Dan Haley declined to provide additional details on Saturday, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The arrest marks a serious child abuse case in Kootenai County, adding to law enforcement’s continued focus on protecting vulnerable residents in the North Idaho region. The case remains under investigation by the Rathdrum Police Department.
