Sandpoint Volunteer Coordinator Honored for Five Years Mobilizing Community Efforts

Val Burgess has earned recognition from the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce as June Volunteer of the Month, honoring her sustained commitment to coordinating volunteer efforts across Bonner County institutions and community events. The award recognizes Burgess’s work in her fifth year as volunteer coordinator for the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum, a role in which she has become instrumental in organizing community participation across North Idaho.

Burgess manages a network of more than 70 museum volunteers and serves on the board of the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum. She created the History Exchange program at the museum, an initiative designed to expand public engagement with local history. Her responsibilities extend beyond the museum walls to coordinating volunteers for signature Panhandle events that require substantial organizational coordination.

A Lifetime of Community Involvement in North Idaho

Burgess’s commitment to Sandpoint and the surrounding Kootenai County area spans decades. She first moved to the region in the 1970s, where she became involved in local activities including coaching soccer and operating the Cotton Mill shop. In the 1990s, she relocated to Seattle but returned to Sandpoint approximately a decade ago, resuming her active role in community affairs.

Since her return, Burgess has engaged with multiple local organizations. She participates in the POAC’s Arts & Crafts Fair and contributes to the Bonner County Garden Association’s Garden Tour, demonstrating a broad involvement across cultural and horticultural initiatives in North Idaho.

Recognizing Volunteer Coordination Excellence

Chamber officials highlighted Burgess’s distinctive talent for matching volunteers with projects suited to their interests and abilities. “She is Sandpoint’s best matchmaker, matching volunteers with projects they’ll love, and Val works hard to make sure each person has an experience that enriches their life,” chamber representatives stated.

Her influence extends to major community events throughout the region. “If you’ve been to a big, successful local event with lots of moving pieces, there’s a good chance Val coordinated the volunteers for it,” the chamber noted, underscoring the scope of her behind-the-scenes organizational work across Bonner County and greater North Idaho.

Impact on Regional Cultural Life

Burgess’s volunteer coordination has enabled the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum to expand its programming and public reach. By recruiting, organizing, and supporting a volunteer corps of over 70 individuals, she has strengthened the institution’s capacity to serve local residents and visitors interested in regional history and heritage.

The recognition from the chamber reflects the value Sandpoint and Bonner County place on individuals who dedicate sustained effort to strengthening community institutions. Burgess’s role as a connector between volunteers and meaningful work exemplifies the kind of organizational infrastructure that allows local events and cultural programs to succeed.
