A male suspect is in custody following a shooting that injured two people early Tuesday morning at an apartment complex in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The Coeur d’Alene Police Department responded to the 200 block of 19th Street around 3:30 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.
Shooting Incident Details
According to police, a man and a woman were returning from downtown when they were confronted by a male resident living at the property. An argument ensued, leading the homeowner to fire a single round that struck both individuals. The male victim sustained a gunshot wound to his upper chest, just above the heart, while the female victim was hit in the hand.
Both victims were transported to Kootenai Health for medical treatment. Authorities detained the suspect at the scene and conducted forensic investigations inside the apartment on Tuesday morning. Police have not released the names of the suspect or the victims, nor have they announced specific charges, citing an ongoing investigation.
Staff Intervention and Community Response
The apartment complex serves as a residential habilitation facility for adults with developmental disabilities or brain injuries. Joseph Alvarado, a staff member working the night shift, heard a loud bang from the unit above the incident location. He applied pressure to the male victim’s wound and attempted to keep him conscious until emergency responders arrived.
Alvarado was questioned by authorities before finishing his 12-hour shift. Coeur d’Alene Police Officer Joseph Scholten confirmed that the immediate danger had passed.
“There’s no further threat,” Scholten said.
Residents expressed shock at the violence within their housing community. Josiah Guthrie, a resident at the complex, questioned the motive behind the attack on his neighbors.
“Someone must’ve come here in the middle of the night to try and hurt them,” Guthrie said.
