Residents of the Wolf Lodge area in Kootenai County witnessed an intense armed confrontation on Tuesday evening that ended with the death of a 45-year-old suspect and critical injuries to a sheriff’s K-9. The incident unfolded after deputies responded to a report of an armed suspicious male around 8 p.m.
What Witnesses Saw
Several residents watched the scene unfold from a safe distance as law enforcement surrounded the suspect. Dallas Hays, 14, observed the confrontation from a few hundred yards away alongside his father, Clinton Hays, and neighbor Kelli Crane. The three stood near their mailbox on the steps as officers moved in.
Dallas described the intensity of the moment, recalling the commands officers issued: “We heard officers screaming and yelling. They told the Coeur d’Alene Press, ‘Come out with your hands up, come out with your hands up, deadly force will and can be used against you.'”
Clinton Hays estimated that approximately 30 deputies converged on the scene as the situation escalated. The presence of law enforcement was overwhelming, he said, though the decisive response impressed at least one observer. Kelli Crane noted the seriousness with which officers handled the call: “It’s good to know how serious they took it, I think, I mean there was no messing around.”
The Incident and Response
The armed suspect, identified as Derek R. Martin, 45, a Bonner County resident, died during the exchange of gunfire with sheriff’s deputies. During the confrontation, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s K-9, Appa, was shot and critically injured.
A shelter-in-place warning was issued to residents approximately two hours after the initial dispatch call, alerting the community to remain indoors while the situation was still ongoing or under investigation.
K-9 Recovery and Investigation
Appa underwent two surgeries following the shooting and was released from veterinary care on Thursday, suggesting the canine’s condition improved enough to return home. The K-9’s survival and recovery was a bright spot in an otherwise serious incident.
The Idaho State Police are investigating the shooting, a standard procedure when law enforcement officers are involved in a use-of-force incident. The investigation will determine the exact circumstances that led to Martin’s death and the shooting of the K-9.
