Major traffic impacts coming to Interstate 90 in Coeur d’Alene

I-90 Construction Brings Overnight Road Closures and Ramp Shutdowns Near Coeur d’Alene

Drivers traveling along the Interstate 90 corridor near Coeur d’Alene should expect traffic disruptions in the coming weeks as the Idaho Transportation Department presses forward with a major bridge widening project.

Huetter Road, which passes beneath I-90, will be fully closed overnight from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Wednesday as construction crews place the girders and beams that form the structural foundation of the bridge deck above.

Ramp Closures Scheduled Through June

Beyond the overnight shutdown, motorists should plan for two temporary on-ramp closures in the weeks ahead. Beginning June 1, the I-90 eastbound on-ramp from Northwest Boulevard will be taken offline. A second ramp closure is also planned. Each closure is expected to last roughly one week.

Transportation crews are rebuilding the ramps to align with the broader freeway widening project and accommodate anticipated traffic growth along the heavily traveled North Idaho corridor.

What Kootenai County Drivers Should Know

Electronic message boards and posted signage along the corridor will direct drivers to detour routes during closures. Commuters who regularly use the Northwest Boulevard on-ramp or travel beneath I-90 at Huetter Road should allow extra time and watch for updated guidance on the signs.

The I-90 widening effort is part of a broader push to modernize infrastructure serving the rapidly growing Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls areas. What Comes Next

The Idaho Transportation Department has not announced a project completion date, but construction activity along the I-90 corridor is expected to continue through the coming weeks. Drivers are encouraged to monitor posted message boards for the most current detour and closure information before heading out.
