Coeur d’Alene Arbor Day event offers free seedlings and tree planting

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Arbor Day Event Offers Free Seedlings, Tree Planting and Raffle at City Park

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho residents have two opportunities this week to participate in the city’s annual Arbor Day celebration, with free tree seedlings, a community planting event, and a raffle scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 24–25. The City of Coeur d’Alene announced the two-day event as part of its recognition as a Tree City USA community — a designation the city is marking for the 42nd consecutive year.

Arbor Day at City Park in Coeur d’Alene

The main Arbor Day event will take place on Friday, April 24, at City Park, located at 415 West Fort Grounds Drive in Coeur d’Alene. The city’s Parks Department will work alongside volunteers to plant 18 trees in self-watering above-ground pots along the seawall from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Coffee and donuts for participating volunteers will be sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts.

A separate booth in front of the City Park Bandshell will distribute free tree seedlings and tree program brochures from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The city is also hosting a raffle offering a few larger young trees in planters, giving residents an additional chance to take home a tree for their property.

The Friday event is expected to draw families, nature enthusiasts, and community volunteers who want to contribute to Coeur d’Alene’s urban tree canopy — a resource that benefits air quality, property values, and quality of life throughout Kootenai County.

North Idaho College Seedling Giveaway on Saturday

On Saturday, April 25, the city’s Urban Forestry Office will partner with North Idaho College to host a tree seedling giveaway at the Molstead Library on the NIC campus from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. The event is tied to the college’s Tree Campus USA recognition and will feature vendor booths and snacks in addition to the free seedling distribution.

Tree Campus USA is a national program that encourages colleges and universities to maintain and grow healthy campus forests. North Idaho College’s participation reflects a broader community commitment in the Coeur d’Alene area to responsible urban forestry and long-term environmental stewardship.

Decades of Tree Giving Across North Idaho

The Arbor Day events are part of a long tradition in the Coeur d’Alene area. According to the city, the Arbor Day Organization of North Idaho has distributed more than 88,000 trees representing over 75 species to local fourth graders since 1985 — a multigenerational effort that has planted roots throughout Kootenai County communities including Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, and Rathdrum.

That kind of community-driven, locally organized initiative represents the kind of volunteerism and civic pride that has long defined life in the North Idaho Panhandle. Rather than relying on large government programs, events like this one depend on neighborhood participation, local business sponsorship, and the dedication of city parks staff and community volunteers.

Coeur d’Alene’s 42-year streak as a Tree City USA community reflects consistent local investment in maintaining a healthy urban forest — one tree at a time. The designation, awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation, recognizes cities that meet standards for urban forestry management, public awareness, and community engagement.

As Coeur d’Alene continues to grow — with new residents arriving from across the Pacific Northwest and beyond — events like this one help reinforce the community character and natural beauty that make North Idaho a desirable place to live, raise a family, and do business. City leaders and community members alike have emphasized the importance of preserving that quality of life even as the region develops. Coeur d’Alene recently welcomed a new Fire Chief, Jon Fugitt, as the city continues to build out its public service leadership team.

How to Get Involved

Residents interested in participating in either Arbor Day event are encouraged to attend during the listed hours. No advance registration was listed for the seedling giveaway. For more information, the City of Coeur d’Alene Parks Department can be reached at (208) 292-5766 or through the city parks website.

Whether you are planting in a yard in Hayden, a lot in Rathdrum, or along a neighborhood street in Post Falls, free seedlings from events like this are a simple, tangible way for North Idaho families to invest in their property and their community. Other free community events are also available in Coeur d’Alene this month, including training opportunities offered through local programs.
