ITD Closes Post Falls I-90 Ramp for Widening Shift

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will close the eastbound Interstate 90 on-ramp from Highway 41 in Post Falls starting Friday at approximately 8 p.m. The closure is part of the ongoing I-90 corridor widening project between Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, designed to expand the interstate to four lanes in each direction.

Ramp Closure and Detour Routes

The eastbound ramp from Highway 41 will remain closed until Oct. 9. During this period, westbound I-90 traffic entering and exiting via Highway 41 will continue to use the existing ramps without interruption. Eastbound drivers facing lane reductions between 8 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday will be directed onto detour routes.

ITD plans to route eastbound motorists west on Seltice Way to access the I-90 on-ramp located near the Seltice Way bridge. This temporary traffic pattern prepares the western side of the construction zone for a major shift in lane alignment.

Traffic Shift and Paving Schedule

The ramp closure facilitates moving westbound lanes to the south side of the interstate. ITD project manager James Dorman indicated that both westbound lanes are targeted to shift to the new alignment on Oct. 20. Once moved, these lanes are expected to remain on the south side for approximately one year while construction continues on the original roadway footprint.

Paving operations on I-90 between U.S. 95 and Northwest Boulevard are tentatively scheduled to begin on Oct. 16. Traffic in both directions will be reduced to a single lane, day and night, through Oct. 18 to accommodate the work. Following the Oct. 20 traffic shift, Huetter Road beneath the interstate will close for up to two weeks. Additionally, overnight closures of the westbound Highway 41 off-ramp are expected for several weeks shortly after the lane shift.

Prairie Trail and Project Funding

The Prairie Trail running beneath I-90 will close for one week starting Oct. 12 to allow for demolition work on the westbound interstate bridge. The trail closure is separate from the vehicle ramp closures but falls within the same construction window.

The $200 million expansion project is funded primarily through Transportation Expansion and Congestion Mitigation (TECM) funds, part of Gov. Brad Little’s Leading Idaho initiative. Construction on the segment between Highway 41 and U.S. 95 is expected to continue through 2029.
