Suspect arrested for shooting and killing a man near Stateline Speedway

A man has been taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder following a fatal shooting near Stateline Speedway in Kootenai County on the evening of Saturday, May 11. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Edsel Robert Johnson, who is now booked in the Kootenai County Jail.

Shooting Followed Argument at Lantern Festival

Authorities say the incident began with a dispute between Johnson and the victim as both were departing a Lantern Festival in the area. The confrontation escalated into a shooting, leaving the victim dead. Following the shooting, deputies say Johnson attempted to drive through a crowd of people near the scene before being detained by law enforcement near North Beck Road and Stateline Speedway.

Suspect Detained Before Leaving the Area

KCSO deputies apprehended Johnson as he was attempting to leave the vicinity. He now faces a charge of second-degree murder. No additional suspects have been named at this time. The investigation remains active, and officials have not released the identity of the victim.

The incident adds to a string of recent public safety events in the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls area. Earlier this month, Silver Lake Mall in Coeur d’Alene was evacuated following a bomb threat, prompting a significant law enforcement response across the region.

What Comes Next

Johnson is expected to face formal court proceedings in Kootenai County. Residents with information related to the shooting are encouraged to contact the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. As the investigation continues, additional charges or details surrounding the victim’s identity may be released.
